I'm a freelancer developer looking to connect with others in the field and was wondering if anyone had any opinions on on which language is gaining popularity among the community. I found this [Programming Trends ](http://www.odesk.com/trends)page, but wanted some feedback from other df members.

I think it depends on the community! Here in London there seems to be a massive shortage of .NET developers at the moment. On the start-up front... I attended [Developers and Startups Match Making](http://www.developerfusion.com/event/8312/developers-and-startups-match-making/) the other day where there seemed that many startups were embracing the Rails (and to a large extent, still PHP too) approach... but struggling to find rails developers with any spare time! And on the other hand, there were a fair few Java developers, but seemingly no-one looking for Java. There was only one .NET-based startup too. Maybe Java and .NET just aren't cool enough for startups! There's a similar site [www.itjobwatch.co.uk](http://www.itjobwatch.co.uk/) that monitors UK job adverts... Would be interested to see what other people think James
