what is purpose of !ispostback property asp.net

  hello i have one web form at the page load event i fetch some data from databse and fill the controls. but when i clicked to button. what happened i cant judge. if we use if nor(ispostback) at page load and define all coding inside this. it allows to modify value but if remove not(ispostback) it will not modify if we place only (ispostback) it will show blank. i mean when page load bydefault its not postback so why we checked that its (not postabck) and what is reason help me i m confused
