Hi, I'm looking for an experienced web developer to custom build a website for my startup. The site is comprehensively planned and I hope to start the build phase as soon as I find the right developer. I will be having a friend of mine handle the look & feel work so I'm only looking for someone to code the functionality of the site, not the design

In terms of budget, I'm spending my own money as it's a start-up so I need to be sensible, but I equally appreciate I can't expect a robust, well-coded site if paying the lowest prices out there, so I am realistic about cost.

If you have experience of building social applications from scratch, are based in or near London and think the project might suit you please read the overview below, then drop me a line to give me an idea of your experience in related projects, what systems you would propose using for my project, your weekly fee and a ballpark approximation for how long you would predict this build to take (I understand this would change on seeing the scope of work in full detail).

    Thanks, Steve

Overview: The site will enable users to find and hire the best service providers in their area, using performance ratings left by each provider's previous customers. It broadly follows the model used by (eg) bookofcooks.com for connecting chefs & diners in the US, or ratedpeople.com in the UK for connecting tradesmen and homeowners, or elance.com for connecting freelancers with people who IT managers. Customer goes on the site, submits details of work they need doing, receives quotes from multiple professionals, chooses the highest rated (or cheapest), has the work done, returns to site to leave a performance rating. Relatively straightforward process, used by quite a few companies these days.

Some of the functionality needed will be: the ability for professionals to create profiles of themselves, or to search through the database for relevant jobs, for customers to be able to submit jobs or leave feedback about professionals etc. Numerous automated notification emails sent to both parties throughout the course of a typical job "you've just received a quote" etc - you get the idea. I'd like to incorporate Google maps on profile pages, Facebook connect throughout to facilitate sharing the site with peers, integration with payment gateway, full SEO and adequate security functionality....I can go into much greater detail as and when we meet to go through the full scope of work.

    Hi Steve,

I hope I'm not too late posting this response. My name is James McLeod and I'm the Chief Technical Consultant for Narvi Digital Media in Brighton. We specialise in developing social sites just like the one you describe above. An example of a social site that I've personally developed is Faces in Places. This is a site for clubbers, a little like Don't Stay In, where clubbers can post photos and interact with each other.

We are based just down the London to Brighton line where social media us a hot topic. I'd be more than happy to talk about your project and how we can get it to market quickly. Being a startup I'd imagine there's no messing about when it comes to clawing back your investment.

If you'd like to know a little more about me, my personal blog is http://followmcleod.wordpress.com. I'm also available at [email protected]. The Narvi site is still being written, but can be viewed at http://www.narvi.co.uk

I look forward to hearing from you.

    James.
