  • Advanced MySQL replication for the masses

    Fri, 8 Apr 2011, 01:30 - 03:30 in San Francisco, United States

Advanced MySQL replication for the massesRecent enhancements to MySQL have improved its performance and usability considerably. When it comes to distributed usage, though, MySQL has still a few bottlenecks and constraints that make the DBAs and developers lifeharder. For example, while MySQL itself is multi tasking, the replication apply, which is core to a large chunk of the web economy, is single thread. Another example is the singular combination of master and slave.

This talk will cover: *Scaling with MongoDB (replica pairs, master/slave, sharding) *Getting started - CRUD and the JavaScript shell *Creating schemas for a document-oriented DB

  • Table Partitioning with RoR!

    Tue, 16 Mar 2010, 01:30 - 03:30 in San Francisco, United States

Ian Kallen joins this MySQL/Ruby meetup to talk about table partitioning implemented in Rails.Managing the size of fast-growing tables provides unique challenges. MySQL 5.1 supports table partitioning that works well with InnoDB but the limitations on primary keys and unique constraints can make it a showstopper. For instance, Ruby on Rails applications typically use integer primary keys which will often conflict with the desired partitioning criteria.

  • Justin Swanhart - Flexviews & managing large amounts of data in MySQL

    Tue, 8 Dec 2009, 02:30 - 04:30 in San Francisco, United States

Managing large amounts of data in MySQL can be very difficult. In order to quickly answer queries, summary tables are often created which contain aggregated data from one or more table. Maintaining such aggregations is often problematic as it is often accomplished with a patchwork of SQL scripts and cron jobs. Flexviews is a toolkit which includes tools for the creation of such tables, while also making a large subset of them incrementally maintainable.
